What do you do
when what you put down on paper
just does not match what you saw in your head?
All the layers and textures in the world are no substitute for mojo.
Wth?! What are you talking about? Sigh. This is fantastic, Pffft!!! You know, I think every artist feels this way. Only the masters knew exactly and executed as they saw it. I was thinking on the drive to the doctor, that my work is a dries of failures and mediocrity. Yet when I post, people leave compliments. Are they just being sycophantic? Yet, here I am, looking at something that disappointed you but I truly love it. The vines, the rock and thY lovely body of water are all mesmerizing. Well done. This is beautiful and I truly love it. Tsup!
How do you turn a waterfall into a beautiful Japanese woman? Ha, easy, just let Bella do water for 'Illustration Friday'. Bet you did not see the beautiful lady, she jumped out at me straight away. Beautiful!
This gets better the longer I look at it...the lower right corner is incredible, the trees growing from the sides, the woman (thank you previous commenters!)
Une oeuvre où la vie jaillit...Je peux entendre le glouglou de l'eau qui me berce agréablement... Elle joue avec les roches... J'adore ces petits poissons... Gros bisous
It has a very calm and gentle look about it and it´s really very nice.
Sometimes though it´s just like you say, what is in your head like an idea doesn´t come to it´s right expression when you´re about to transform it from idea to reality.
Bella - I see the lady, too! And she has a butterfly for lips. I am wondering how those fish intend to scale that vertical, but go, fish, go! Nothing I make ever looks like it does in my head (in my head I am AWESOME - hahaha), so I know what you mean. But you'll have to take our word for it - this is a lovely, calming piece. xox!
Haha, if what I saw in my head came out on the paper I would have to put it in a locked drawer and only get it out on sundays after church - when I am feeling really really good (whose "good"? I hear you say)and spiritual so I can balance out the fun part :)
Hah, let me go and admire your work again,. You know Bella, though at first glance your work warm and lyrical, at second glance we see the true darkness that hides beneath it, you can't fool me, I know what those fish are thinking! And what they do in water .....
I loved exploring this, the details kept surprising my poor jaded brain :)
That's not put my "head" in a locked drawer by the way - if I did that I would never be able to find the way to church so i could get "it" out on Sundays - nice try Bella, you nearly tricked me :)
See, and I love all the details, and soft colors... but I understand the "artist torment" of not getting on paper what was in your head. :) Creative exercises are never a bad thing. Enjoy your week.
This one's kinda got that ghostly Halloween feel. But what can I say that hasn't been said already in the 300 plus comments that have been left? You know, almost every idea in my head is different than the final rendition, but I don't believe I've seen one dud from you so far. This one's pretty cool, but imagine it as an animating GIF. Ooooooooo...
Oh Bella, this is so beautiful! I kept staring at it, before I even begun to read your blog post. It's like a lyrical poem. I'm happy you allowed us to weigh in on its beauty, since I know many artists' disappointments don't see the light of day. I'm glad the goddess of beauty made you push it our way...and we are happy! :)
So pretty! I just love the way you add all the tiny perfect details. I think it's good they don't always come out exactly as we intended. Sometimes it's too bad, but sometimes it's an unexpected change for the better. :)
Meh? I think the concept is beautiful and what you have here is gorgeous.
I know what you mean...I don't think anything in my head ever happens with my pen. No where near what you do! For me, sometimes it ends up better, most the time- not so much.
But you, you are so incredibly talented and witty. Your drawing are charming, surprising and intriguing. Do I think this is your best? No. (Don't hate me fellow commenters!) But I do love it. It IS really fantastic.
Ps. So glad to click over here and see your amazing stuff and voice again! Big hugs to you Bella.
Bella, this was/is not my favorite....until I looked without thinking. Then I "saw" a humanized waterfall wit eyes, flutterby lips, and fish clinging to "her" gown. Suddenly--I mean suddenly, it became beautiful to me.
200 years "hence" this may be the work which defines your art life. C'mon don't laugh when I'm writing serious shit here--grinning!
Sometimes I feel like one of those fish, with such a brutally long way to swim. UP!
LOVE your colors, always, I mean ALWAYS! Bye. PEACE!

I was too busy admiring the whole image that I failed to notice the rainbows!!! This is a very delightful illustration.

It looks beautiful to me, Bella. There's a lovely woman in your waterfall, so I find it completely charming.
What did you intend?
See, and I love all the details, and soft colors... but I understand the "artist torment" of not getting on paper what was in your head. :)

You are so clever! I love how the butterfly kisses her lips... and the swimming fishies?? I wonder where they're swimming to...
As I said, you are just sooooooo clever.
XOXO
